Clerk's Justification for Mileage Discrepancies
The following explanations were provided by Clerk Janell Beard to the Michigan State Police and are included in the official investigation report. The "Discrepancy" statements have been added by eley.org, based on Clerk Beard's mileage reimbursement requests, which are posted <here>.
4/06/2006
“Trip to Bath, Michigan, BS&A Software, IT Right for website training. Picked up staff member Erica DeCair who lives at <address redacted> Michigan Blvd Twin Lake, Michigan 49457, traveled to Bath 14965 Abbey Lane, Bath, Michigan, 48808, then returned Erica home, and returned home myself to <address redacted> Riley Thompson Road, Whitehall, Michigan 49461”
Discrepancy: Clerk claims the Twin Lake pick-up added 111 miles to her journey.

“Consolidated election day travels include travels between the three precincts of Fruitland Township, travel into the city of Whitehall to pick up lunch for precinct 1 and precinct 3, and travel to Muskegon County Clerk’s office to deliver election results.”
Discrepancy: Clerk claims crisscrossing the Township, going to Whitehall and Muskegon equals 135 miles.

“Travel to Lansing Center for a Bureau of Elections training, picked up staff member Wendy Bloem, who resides at <address redacted> Twin Lake, Michigan 49457, then picked up Fruitport Township Clerk, Carol Hulka, who resides at <address redacted> Dangl Road, Fruitport, Michigan, then proceeded to the Lansing Center for training, then returned Wendy and Carol [to] their homes, then I went home as well.”
Discrepancy: Clerk claims the Twin Lake pick-up and swing through Fruitport added 122 miles to her journey.

“Traveled from home to Walker for a West Michigan regional Clerk’s organizational meeting for a seminar to be held on September 14, 2006 in the new City of East Grand Rapids Complex. The Bob Evans restaurant is located where the bridge replacement is occurring on I-96 in Walker, I traveled to next exit north, then came southbound to access restaurant.”
Discrepancy: Clerk claims the one exit detour added 65 miles to her journey.

“Traveled from the Fruitland Township Hall to Grand Haven Chamber of Commerce to discover Grand Haven Holiday Inn is the Spring Lake Exit, for a seminar on “Filling in the Gaps” Picked up staff member Sally Garvey who resides at <address redacted> River Road, Muskegon, Michigan 49445, traveled to Spring Lake, then returned Sally home and myself as well.”
Discrepancy: Clerk claims missing her exit added 10 miles to her journey.

“Traveled from home to the Prince Conference Center, at Calvin College to attend the Michigan Townships Association Fall District seminar, then returned to the Fruitland Township Hall, 4545 Nestrom Road, Whitehall, Michigan 49461 for a meeting of the Fruitland Township Board.”
Discrepancy: Clerk provides no explanation for the additional 87 miles reported for this journey.

“Traveled to the City of East Grand Rapids, I-96 to Wealthy exit to City of East Grand Rapids Complex. Picked up staff member Wendy Bloem <address redacted> Automobile Road, Twin Lake, Michigan 49457 for the West Michigan regional clerk’s seminar, then returned home.”
Discrepancy: Clerk claims the Twin Lake pick-up added 100 miles to her journey.
